Marie’s story: Finding her way back to work

“You never know what you can achieve until you put yourself out there.”

After spending several years away from the workforce in a caring role, Marie came to SYC looking to refresh her skills, rebuild her confidence and find meaningful employment.

Originally from Montreal, Canada, Marie was ready to return to work but found the process daunting. She experienced anxiety about finding employment and often struggled to recognise the skills, experience and abilities she already had.

Through her involvement in SYC's training programs and support services, Marie received encouragement and guidance to help her work towards her goals.

Marie also received individualised support through SYC's Success and Wellbeing Services (SWS). SWS Coach Leah worked alongside Marie to help her overcome self-doubt, recognise her strengths and build confidence as she prepared to return to employment.

SWS provides one-on-one support to help students overcome barriers, build confidence and take their next steps towards employment.

With Leah's encouragement and ongoing support, Marie began to feel more positive about her abilities and what she could achieve.

She has since secured meaningful employment in a workplace where she feels valued and supported.

While finding a job was an important milestone, Marie's experience has also been about recognising her own abilities, developing greater confidence and gaining a renewed sense of what is possible.

Reflecting on her experience, Marie shared:

“Sometimes taking a step back is actually a step forward.”

Marie’s journey is a reminder that returning to work doesn't have to happen all at once. With the right training, encouragement and support, people can build confidence, recognise their strengths and take steps towards their employment goals.

Congratulations, Marie, on all you've achieved. We wish you every success in this next chapter!
