Types of opportunities

Student Placements

Placements allow students to apply theoretical concepts learned in the classroom to real-world situations, bridging the gap between academic study and professional practice. Placements are often a compulsory component of degree programs.

Youth Justice Internship

The internship is designed to connect academic knowledge with real-world experience, fostering the development of professional skills. Interns will benefit from structured mentorship and career focused tasks one day per week over a period of 12 months.

Group Mentor

Our Tailored Learning programs support young people who have disengaged (or at risk of disengaging) from high school to overcome their barriers and re-engage with their learning through purposeful, weekly case management. Group Mentors assist our programs supporting staff and our young people.

Skilled Workshops

Volunteer facilitated workshops where talented individuals with an interest in areas such as art, music, design or cooking share their expertise, provide encouragement and foster a welcoming environment.

Program and Wellbeing Support

Support and assist our staff, working alongside our clients, to ensure our programs operate effectively while fostering a safe, encouraging environment.

Administration & Project Work

‘Behind the scenes’ support and assistance, can be skills based such as Data Analysis, Marketing or Human Resources.

"I began volunteering as a university student because I felt a strong desire to learn practically and from real life experience, and real human beings! I did not feel that university alone was giving me the knowledge to be able to pursue a career in community services confidently. By supporting staff and working with young people face-to-face, I am able to develop a deeper understanding of myself as a worker, the people I hope to work with, and the systems that I will be encountering once I enter the workforce. Volunteering is the space between studying and working, where you have far less responsibility, can learn actively from an experienced role model, and can ask questions constantly!"

"I cannot express how much it has meant to me to volunteer with the wonderful young people engaged with SYC, first at Studio West and then The Foundry by SYC. It is not an exaggeration to say the experience has changed my life. I didn’t know what I was capable of when I stepped into the first learning environment I was assigned to, but my volunteering journey has opened up my heart to embrace those outside my previously small circle, opened doors to new learning and opportunities, and opened my eyes to how fundamentally important connection and community is for us all."

"I am a Psychology student at The University of Adelaide and have recently had the pleasure of engaging in an internship at SYC, as part of my degree. I believe that completing an internship at SYC has helped me to consolidate knowledge and understanding I had previously learnt. I have added to my skills and feel confident in being able to navigate the process for future projects. What I have added to my skill-set will be incredibly useful for when I go on to complete my honours study, and maybe a PhD in the future. I believe the process is incredibly beneficial, particularly as a student looking towards postgraduate education. I really enjoyed being in such a welcoming and supportive environment, this made my experience even more worthwhile."

Hannah B
Placement Student

"I have really enjoyed my time here at SYC and working with the LEES team has been amazing. I have gained invaluable skills and knowledge as well as experience, everyone has been very supportive during my placement. It has even been part of the inspiration for me to look at doing some further post-grad studies in human services when I finish my degree!"

Rich E
Placement Student

"As a Psychology student I wanted to explore volunteering opportunities where I learn more about working with young people. It has been an amazing experience volunteering with SYC. Every time I go to volunteer I learn something new, I love the diversity because you get to learn everything about the company. Each week I look forward to working with the friendly and caring team. I have really learnt a lot regarding my interpersonal skills. I truly believe that volunteering has made me grow as a person and I take pride in what I do as a volunteer."

"I volunteer to be productive, contribute to the community and to have social interaction. I know the world would stop turning without volunteers."
