World Youth Skills Day 2026: Building skills for a shared future

On World Youth Skills Day, we celebrate how skills development helps young people build confidence, discover their strengths and create pathways towards their future.

This year's theme, Skills for a Shared Future, highlights the role young people play in shaping our communities and industries when they have access to the right opportunities, training and support.

At SYC, we support young people through our programs and services, helping them build skills, grow in confidence and take their next steps towards education, employment and independence. Through Workforce Australia – Transition to Work, Education and Training, and Australian Apprenticeship Support Services, we help young people achieve their goals.

When Caidence joined SYC’s Workforce Australia – Transition to Work program in Queensland, she was shy and unsure of herself. With support from her Employment Coach, she began stepping outside her comfort zone, building confidence and recognising her strengths.

Over time, Caidence grew in confidence, showing resilience and determination as she worked towards her goals.

With a passion for working with children, Caidence recently enrolled to complete a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, gaining the skills and qualifications to pursue a career she is passionate about.

Caidence also joined a resume drop session, which led to an interview with Subway. After successfully completing a trial, she secured her first job and is now part of the Subway team.

Caidence said she is excited to begin her first role, especially knowing her Mum’s first job was also at Subway.

We’re incredibly proud of Caidence’s growth and willingness to embrace new opportunities.

SYC’s Education and Training programs also help young people build practical skills and gain hands-on experience for future careers.

Through our partnership with the South Australian Housing Trust (SAHT), students in the Building Links and Build Your Career programs gain construction experience by helping renovate SAHT properties. While developing practical trade skills on site, they contribute to real projects that support local communities.

Two students who completed their Certificate II in Construction through SYC’s Building Links program last year have already taken the next step in their careers. After connecting with employers at the ATEC sign-up day earlier this year, both secured carpentry apprenticeships and have started their careers in the industry.

Their achievements show the impact of combining practical training, industry connections and ongoing support to help young people move from education into meaningful employment.

This World Youth Skills Day, we recognise young people who are building skills, exploring opportunities and taking steps towards their goals.

Their stories remind us that with the right support, training and opportunities, young people can develop the confidence and skills to thrive, benefiting themselves and the communities and industries they help shape.
