Start Your Deadly Career: The Power of Working Together

SYC's Start Your Deadly Career Program has just successfully wrapped up in Melton, Preston and Frankston. Working in partnership with Mob Jobs, this three-week program is aimed at participants in the Workforce Australia program and combines cultural connection with career development, ensuring individuals gain job-ready skills and a renewed sense of pride and identity. The program has gained significant momentum recently, and due to the successful outcomes achieved, we are receiving increasing referrals. Currently, we have supported 70% of participants from the program to placement.

The collaboration between Mob Jobs and SYC began in 2023 when SYC approached Mob Jobs to discuss a partnership to support First Nations Job Seekers. With the guidance of Mob Jobs and the support of SYC, participants engage in workshops that provide an opportunity for participants to connect with their culture while learning the practical skills to thrive in the workforce.

“Their (Mob Jobs) work strengthens community connections and ensures we can truly uplift First Nations peoples. Since joining our initiative, Mob Jobs have been exceptional partners. They've listened closely to our vision, tailoring their approach to help participants progress into further study or sustainable employment.” – Chris, Employment Activity Coordinator at SYC.
Uncle Lionel Dukakis, Co-Founder and Director of Mob Jobs, adds, “By focusing on cultural identity alongside the practical aspects of employment, we are providing participants with the tools they need to succeed—while staying true to who they are.”

The Program continues to partner with a number of aligned organisations to extend the value and support provided to participants. Ready Set, a not-for-profit organisation that helps job seekers by providing professional clothing and coaching, recently joined us during the program and generously donated 50 items of work-appropriate clothing to the participants. Their support ensured participants felt job-ready, with many sharing how much more confident they felt in their new gear.

Through a focus on cultural connection and career growth, the Start Your Deadly Career Program is helping participants build confidence and strength for the future. We’re proud to see the positive outcomes emerging from these partnerships and look forward to the continued impact they will have.
