At SYC, our Flexible Learning Options (FLO) programs are dedicated to empowering young people who face complex barriers to education. Through tailored support in both Generalist and Specialist case management, we ensure that each student’s unique needs are met. Generalist FLO assists those who are significantly disengaged from learning, while Specialist FLO provides intensive support for students with high and complex needs.
We are excited to share the incredible achievements from a few students in the FLO program at Studio East. Each story reflects their resilience and determination, illustrating how our supportive environment helps them overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
One student Jake*, has shown significant progress by increasing his attendance from two days to four each week. Through his active participation in all activities, Jake is not only enhancing his literacy and numeracy skills but also deepening his understanding of key concepts. His progress this year is a true reflection of his dedication.
Next, we have Lily*.
She’s taking important steps in her learning journey by opening up to her FLO case managers about her wellbeing and mental health struggles. This newfound connection has led to her increased participation in Education Perfect, an online learning platform that tailors learning experiences to her needs. Lily’s willingness to seek support is a positive shift that marks a wonderful step forward in her journey.
Another one of our students, Alex*, is excited to join the upcoming CDW Studios School of Visual Effects and Entertainment Design holiday workshop on 2D and 3D animation modeling online via Zoom. By participating in this workshop, Alex is not only embracing a fantastic opportunity but also stepping out of their comfort zone. Their enthusiasm for learning and readiness to take on new challenges is a significant milestone in their journey as a neurodivergent student!
Lastly, we’d love to shine a spotlight on Sam*, who joined our FLO program during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has shown incredible progress over the past two years. Initially facing significant mental health challenges, including social anxiety, Sam struggled with attendance and engagement. However, with self-determination and the support of his FLO case managers, he has gained confidence and motivation. Recently, Sam celebrated some impressive milestones. He completed a Certificate II in Automotive Pathways, obtained his Provisional License, and secured a full-time position with a reputable tire manufacturing company. Sam’s achievements are a testament to his hard work.
We are incredibly proud of all our students and look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next.
Our programs not only help students stay engaged in school, but also empower them to explore further education and career opportunities. We provide guidance in crafting resumes and cover letters and connect students with essential community resources for mental and physical health, housing, and more, ensuring a holistic approach to their needs.
