Mia's Journey Through SYC's FLO Program

news_img

Mia*, a student at SYC, has made significant progress over the past two and a half years. Initially struggling with anxiety and uncertainty about her educational path, she is now confidently navigating her future.

At the core of Mia’s transformation is SYC’s Flexible Learning Options (FLO) program. Designed specifically for young people at risk of disengaging from school. FLO provides personalised case management and tailored support, empowering students to reengage with their education and discover new opportunities for learning and employment. SYC’s commitment to creating inclusive and supportive environments has been a game changer for many students like Mia, who don’t thrive in a traditional classroom.

For over a decade, SYC has been committed to offering Alternative Learning services that foster inclusive and supportive environments. These programs are designed to address the unique needs of young people, helping them develop vital life skills and the confidence needed for successful transitions into the workforce. At Studio West, one of SYC’s Learning environments, the team emphasise wellbeing, resilience and employability, ensuring every student has the tools to achieve their goals.

During her time at Studio West, Mia has completed several SACE subjects, earned a Certificate II in Food Processing and obtained her First Aid certification. With the help of her mentors, she has also secured her learner’s permit and has maintained a job for the past eight months!

This year, Mia is working on a Certificate II in Foundation Skills and has completed a Retail Immersion course. She recently finished her White Card training and is set to participate in Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training later this year. Additionally, she’s excited to enrol in a Bread Making course at TAFE and has accepted an offer for a Certificate III in Patisserie next year.

Mia’s progress reflects her growing independence and confidence, showcasing the impact of the FLO program on her education.
We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!
