Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2024

Over the last week, our team has had an incredible time attending events across South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. We participated in meaningful discussions, cultural activities, and community gatherings that celebrated the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At SYC, we're committed to honouring and empowering First Nations voices. This year's theme, 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud' celebrates the strength, resilience and vibrant culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It honours the enduring vitality of First Nations culture and invites all Australians to stand in solidarity.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and traditions with us. The week was filled with moments of reflection and joy. We continue to learn, respect, and celebrate the voices of First Nations peoples as we pursue our vision of wellbeing, independence and opportunity for all Australians.

NAIDOC in the Mall
The City of Adelaide hosted NAIDOC in the Mall on Kaurna Land (SA). We also participated in NAIDOC in the North, where SYC operated a ParentsNext stall.
NAIDOC in the South
We attended NAIDOC in the South an event and march on Kaurna Land hosted by Neporendi Aboriginal Forum and City of Onkaparinga.
Our Queensland team gave thanks to our Yugambeh traditional landowner and valued Elder Aunty Robyn Williams, as they celebrated Logan NAIDOC together.

The team wore matching shirts designed by Luke Mallie, inspired by his heritage from Kuku Yalanji and Kubin Village country, celebrating NAIDOC 2024 with the theme "Fire Spirit People". These shirts embody ancient storytelling through dance, honouring the land's sacredness and the enduring pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

QTIC NAIDOC Corporate Event at Brisbane City Hall. Joshua Creamer, a descendant of the Waanyi and Kalkadoon people from North Western Queensland, was the key speaker. Joshua is a barrister specialising in human rights class actions and native title. We enjoyed hearing his inspirational story.

NAIDOC Week is not just about celebration but also about reflection and respect. We honour the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit to fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.

We also would like to thank and acknowledge our staff who continue to represent their Countries, mobs and ancestors.
