Celebrating 10 Years of Tenancy Support at SYC

This year marks 10 years since SYC began providing tenancy support, helping South Australians to understand their rights, sustain their homes and navigate complex housing challenges.

What began as the Tenant Information and Advocacy Service (TIAS) has evolved into RentRight SA, a free statewide service that helps people understand their rights, resolve tenancy issues and stay safely housed.

Over the past decade, our tenancy team has answered thousands of calls from renters across South Australia. Behind every call is a person facing stress, uncertainty or hardship, and on the other side of the line is someone ready to listen, guide and advocate.

Today, RentRight SA provides independent advice on everything from tenancy disputes and SACAT proceedings to understanding rental agreements and rights. Recognising the growing link between financial stress and housing insecurity, financial counselling is now a key part of our service. Our qualified counsellors provide confidential support to tenants facing financial challenges, helping them find sustainable solutions and, in many cases, avoid eviction or homelessness.

Since introducing this support, our financial counsellors have already helped dozens of tenants maintain their tenancies, with many more receiving guidance to regain stability and control.

While we’re proud of how far RentRight SA has come, the ongoing demand for tenancy support shows the pressures many South Australians still face. That’s why we’re so grateful for the people behind the service who listen, advocate, and empower tenants every day.

As one of our tenancy advisors shared:

“As an advisor, I help tenants understand their rights and guide them through processes like SACAT. It’s rewarding to see people keep their homes and get fair treatment. Our work really makes a difference.”

Our Youth Tenancy Advisors also play a critical role, often being the first point of contact for young people seeking housing support. As one shared:

“In some cases, I am just a tenancy advisor for young people looking for housing for the first time. For others I’m the first person who has listened without judgement, supported without prejudice and understood without being there. Everyone in our team works hard to be that safe space. The housing market is not easy to navigate, but we continue to support young people in finding safe outcomes because someone must.”

Among those who have shaped the service is Julie Nemet, Manager of Tenancy Services (RentRight SA), who has dedicated more than 23 years to SYC. Julie recently received SYC’s Lifetime Supporter Award, recognising her incredible contribution and leadership.

From the early days of TIAS to the establishment of RentRight SA, Julie has been a compassionate leader, mentoring staff, supervising teams and ensuring clients always receive quality, empathetic support.

Her impact extends far beyond service delivery, she has built a culture of care and professionalism that continues to define the team today.

“Julie’s passion and adaptability have had a lasting impact on countless lives,” shares her colleague. “She truly embodies what it means to walk alongside people with dignity and respect.”

Ten years on, RentRight SA remains a vital service for renters across South Australia. While the demand for housing support continues to grow, we remain committed to empowering tenants, preventing homelessness, and creating fairer outcomes across the rental sector.

We thank our dedicated staff, past and present, who have made this milestone possible and who continue to ensure that every tenant who reaches out is met with understanding, respect and support.
