It's never too late to learn new skills, build confidence and take a new direction.
After joining SYC's Basic Skills for the Food Industry Skill Set (SSDIS01007) course, Deb was ready to develop her skills and improve her employment opportunities.
Following successful completion of her training, Deb continued working towards her employment goals with support from SYC's Success and Wellbeing Services (SWS) team through post-course transition support.
SWS provides individualised, one-on-one support to help students overcome barriers to learning, successfully complete their training and take their next steps towards employment. This can include building confidence, developing practical skills and connecting students with the right support for their circumstances.
For Deb, this meant working closely with SWS Coach Leah to strengthen her job-readiness skills, prepare her resume and cover letter, and develop her interview skills.
Throughout their sessions, Leah supported Deb to work through challenges with computer skills, confidence and self-esteem, as well as concerns about whether her age might affect her employment opportunities.
With Leah's encouragement and ongoing support, Deb continued working towards her goals, recognising her own strengths and the skills she could bring to a workplace.
Her hard work paid off, with Deb recently securing employment.
Reflecting on her experience, Deb shared:
“Going to SYC was one of the greatest things I did.”
Her advice to others considering training or returning to work is simple:
“Don’t let yourself believe age is a barrier.”
