World Youth Skills Day 2024 - Empowering Young People Through Skills Development

On World Youth Skills Day, observed on 15 July, we celebrate the role of skills development in transforming the lives of young individuals worldwide. This day reminds us of the immense potential of young people when equipped with the right tools and opportunities.

At SYC, we’re proud to provide programs and services that empower people with skills and opportunities for education, employment, and wellbeing. Whether through our Australian Apprenticeship Support Services, our Education and Training team, or our Workforce Australia—Transition to Work program, we’re committed to helping people succeed.

Workforce Australia –Transition to Work is a program for school leavers and young individuals aged 15-24. It provides free support to Australian citizens or those holding an appropriate visa, helping them transition into the workforce or further education.

One inspiring success story is that of Nick, a determined young individual passionate about becoming a hairdresser. Before joining SYC’s Transition to Work program in Queensland, Nick faced challenges securing an apprenticeship despite his skills and enthusiasm. Libby, one of our youth employment coaches, recognised Nick's potential during their very first meeting. Impressed by his presentation and communication skills, she knew that with the right guidance, he could succeed. Libby worked closely with Nick to tailor his resume for the hairdressing industry and assisted him in applying for multiple apprenticeship opportunities.

Nick wasted no time in submitting applications and the results were immediate. He received calls for interviews the very next day. After a successful interview and a job trial he loved, Nick was offered an apprenticeship in April and has excelled in his role since.

Nick's journey highlights the impact of skills development and mentorship on shaping successful careers. It emphasises the importance of providing young people with the necessary support to thrive in their chosen fields.

As we commemorate World Youth Skills Day 2024, let’s celebrate stories like Nick's and reaffirm our commitment to empowering young people with skills and confidence to build a brighter future.
