Supporting First Nations Job Seekers in the Murray South East

SYC is proud to collaborate with IntoJobs to deliver a culturally informed pre-employment program for First Nations participants in the Murray South East region.

Over two weeks, participants from Berri, Murray Bridge and surrounding areas came together to take part in a supportive, strengths-based program focused on building confidence, overcoming barriers and creating lasting pathways into employment. Designed in three phases, this program represents the first step in a targeted employment strategy developed specifically to support First Nations job seekers.

A unique part of this collaboration was bringing clients together in one culturally safe space, building new connections and solidarity through shared experiences. Together, participants explored barriers that can impact employment and practical tools and strategies to grow personal resilience.

A key part of the program was a series of workshops led by Stephen Cain, an inspiring speaker whose life experience and honest storytelling left a lasting impression. Born in Yallourn, Victoria, Stephen became a ward of the state as a child and spent many years navigating trauma, incarceration and homelessness. At 35, he made the decision to change direction. Today, he runs his own business and uses his story to empower others to break the cycle and create a positive future.

Each session with Stephen was participant-led, with conversations shaped by the needs and lived experience of the group. His open and respectful approach created a culturally safe environment for reflection, discussion and growth. Stephen also makes himself available to participants after the sessions, offering continued mentorship and support.

Many participants admitted feeling unsure at first but soon found themselves engaged and inspired by the open conversations and Stephen’s lived experience. Their feedback shows just how valuable the experience was:

“I really enjoyed the program. I was a bit sceptical on the first day but I’m so glad I came. I’d do the course again in a heartbeat and would recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity.”
“It really opened my mindset. I’ve learned not to stop at the first roadblock but to look for another way forward. I’m seeing job opportunities differently now and I’m confident I’ll be able to find something that works for me.”

By focusing on cultural and career development, this collaboration is not just preparing participants for jobs; it’s empowering them to move forward with pride and resilience. We are excited about the continued success of this partnership and the opportunities it creates for First Nations participants.
