Opening Doors for Women in Construction

We were proud to partner with Building Women as the accredited training provider for Building Women’s Construction Taster Program, a seven-week course giving women the opportunity to explore careers in construction.

Building Women is a not-for-profit organisation committed to increasing female participation in construction through training, empowerment and meaningful employment pathways. As one of the project partners, SYC was pleased to support this initiative, which is creating new opportunities for women in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

As the accredited training provider, SYC delivered the Introduction to Construction Skill Set at SYC’s Edinburgh Workshop. Participants gained hands-on experience and developed their skills in areas including working at heights, carpentry and using power tools, while building confidence and exploring different roles within the construction sector.

During the Working at Heights unit, the Hon Amanda Rishworth MP joined participants, taking the time to hear about their experiences and discuss the importance of supporting women into construction careers. Matt Burnell MP, the Hon Katrine Hildyard MP and Ella Shaw, Labor candidate for Elizabeth, also attended the graduation at SYC’s Education and Training Hub to celebrate the participants’ achievements. All 15 participants completed the program, marking a significant milestone that reflects their dedication and the support behind them.

Throughout the seven weeks, participants gained industry insights through site visits, including the Playford Alive urban renewal project with BMD and Renewal SA’s Works Program. These visits provided a practical insight into how large-scale projects operate and highlighted the diverse range of career pathways available across the construction industry.

Funded through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ Building Women’s Careers initiative, Building Women coordinated the involvement of SYC and a range of partners, including CITB South Australia, NAWIC SA, Maxima Group Australia, the Australian Flexible Pavement Association, the Office for Women, and Renewal SA. The resulting program demonstrates how collaboration between government, industry, training providers, and community organisations can deliver innovative and impactful outcomes for participants.

SYC is proud to support initiatives that open doors, build skills and create real opportunities for women in construction. It was wonderful to work alongside Building Women, and we wish all participants every success.
