SYC joined more than 600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students at the North Eastern Nunga Tag Carnival and Expo on Kaurna Country.
Families, community members and local organisations from Adelaide’s north-eastern, northern and western suburbs, as well as Murray Bridge, came together for the annual event.
Celebrating sport, culture and connection, the carnival featured a round robin Nunga Tag tournament alongside an expo where students could engage with schools, services and community organisations.
Former NRL and UK Super League player, and current NRL Indigenous Programs Manager, Dean Widders, attended the event alongside Avenues College to help co-host the day.
The carnival gave young people, schools and community members the opportunity to connect in a positive and welcoming environment, while learning more about local services and supports available within community.
SYC’s Aboriginal Employment Mentor, Thalia, said the day highlighted the strength of community collaboration and connection.
“The day was a great example of collaboration from community. Everyone came together with a great attitude and support for one another, from schools to stall holders. Everybody embraced the sense of community and it was an amazing day.”
Thank you to everyone involved in creating such a meaningful day. It was great to see so many young people, schools and organisations coming together through sport and community.
