On 17 May, we joined millions of people around the world to recognise the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia, known as IDAHOBIT.
IDAHOBIT is about celebrating pride and allyship, while also raising awareness of the discrimination that LGBTQIA+ people continue to face.
At SYC, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and celebrated for who they are. That’s why our Mitchelton and Strathpine sites came together to mark this important day with connection and conversation.
"A theme we regularly hear from our LGBTQIA+ participants is the importance of feeling safe on public transport"
Shared SYC's Strathpine Site Manager. In response, the sites welcomed an officer from the Queensland Police Service Pride Network to discuss personal safety, particularly in public spaces and everyday interactions.
We also supported participants to enrol in PrepL, an online learning and assessment tool that helps them take the first step towards getting their learner's licence. Several young people were also connected to PCYC’s Braking the Cycle program, which pairs participants with volunteer mentors to complete their supervised driving hours.
The day was filled with activities and support, from games and crafts, to gift bags packed with helpful resources and rainbow-themed treats. It was a fun experience for everyone involved and a meaningful way to build connection and confidence.
At SYC, we’re proud to create safe, inclusive spaces where everyone feels respected and welcomed.
IDAHOBIT is coordinated by Minus18, Australia’s LGBTQIA+ youth charity. You can learn more and explore resources at www.IDAHOBIT.org.au.
