Growing Together: SYC and Weeks Homes Cultivate Community in Mansfield Park

SYC’s ongoing collaboration with our corporate partner, Weeks Homes, has recently brought about a significant transformation at SYC’s townhouse block in Mansfield Park, providing a welcoming space for our tenants to connect and feel truly at home. Alongside enhancing the landscaping surrounding the eight units, we have constructed an outdoor dining area complete with a BBQ and furniture. This space will serve as a venue for SYC staff to conduct weekly cooking programs and for residents to gather regularly. Additionally, we have installed a raised vegetable garden to supply produce for these weekly cook-ups.

This project marks the second major partnership between Weeks Homes and SYC. In December 2022, Weeks Homes generously donated $42,000 worth of equipment and supplies, which helped us transform an empty car park into a delightful children's playground and parent social area at another one of our independent housing locations.

Mark Hoffman-Davis, CEO of SYC, expressed our organisation’s gratitude for the outcome of the Mansfield Park project, stating, “We are thankful to Weeks Homes for their ongoing commitment to collaborating with us in creating positive experiences for our clients, especially through our housing initiatives. Their generous donations add value and enhance the impact of our work, as do the time and passion contributed by their team members who participate in events like this.”

In addition to the support from Weeks Homes, SYC staff dedicated their time and efforts both on the day and in the lead-up to the Working Bee. Hoffman-Davis extended his appreciation, saying, “Thank you to all the SYC staff who helped coordinate the day behind the scenes and on the ground, assembling new furniture, organising a fantastic BBQ lunch, and ensuring the day ran smoothly.”

The community of suppliers associated with Weeks Homes also actively supported the initiative, helping bring the space to life for SYC’s young tenants. Peter McIndoe, CEO of Weeks Homes, remarked, “It has been wonderful to witness not only the enthusiasm of our staff for this project but also the contributions of multiple suppliers and trades who generously donated their services.”

These suppliers and businesses either donated or provided their products at significant discounts: Pro Cut Laws, Kennards Hire, Bunnings, Newtons Landscaping, Fisher & Paykel, Concslab, Hanson, SMT Drainage, Sennis, and CBS Bins.

SYC would also like to acknowledge the generosity of the Matana Foundation for Young People, who supported the renovation project with a $15,000 grant.
