Angela joined SYC’s Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program to build her numeracy and writing skills. After more than 15 years away from formal education, she felt nervous about returning to learning. The SEE Program gave her a welcoming and supportive space where she could build her skills, grow her confidence and take the next steps toward her goals.
“I was lacking a lot of confidence within myself prior to starting this program and was very uncertain of my future and what I could achieve. Since starting here, SYC have helped me in many ways, my confidence has grown immensely and I have learnt to believe in myself.” – Angela
Throughout the program, Angela committed herself to every part of the learning process, from group workshops to online lessons and assessments. With support from SYC’s Trainer and Assessor and Participant Support Officer, she met her milestones and achieved more than she expected.
“I have found the work helpful and have learnt many new things especially with technology and using programs like excel. I also really enjoy coming into class, it's such a welcoming and supportive experience for me and I have met some wonderful people.”
Building on her progress, Angela enrolled in a Certificate III in Disability. She used the literacy, numeracy and digital skills she developed during the SEE Program to complete her enrolment and pre-enrolment tasks. She later undertook work experience in the disability support sector, where she discovered both confidence and a genuine passion for the work.
“Not only has SYC supported me throughout the SEE Program, they also helped me take the step to study my Cert III in Disability, which I’m so grateful for. I now have work experience starting in a few short weeks, again thanks to the SEE Program.”
Angela’s dedication and determination have been inspiring to her peers and the SEE team. She remained focused on her goals, worked through challenges and celebrated each milestone along the way. Angela has now completed the program and is focusing on her Certificate III in Disability while working full-time in the disability care sector with the employer who hosted her work placement.
“Joining the SEE Program was a great opportunity for me. After being a stay-at-home mum for 10 years, I wasn’t sure what to do next. Joining this program helped me improve my computer skills and gain the confidence to enrol in a Certificate III in Disability Support which was my goal and I now have employment in this sector! For anyone who isn’t sure what to do next in life, I think this program is fantastic, learning new things, meeting lovely people who become friends and having a trainer that supports you and your goals has helped get me to where I want to be.”
Angela’s story is an incredible example of how the SEE Program supports people to build confidence, learn new skills, and take the next step towards meaningful education and employment. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and look forward to seeing what she does next.
