Building Pathways into Construction for First Nations Participants with TAPS

SYC was proud to partner with TAPS to support a First Nations Introduction to Trades and Construction course, giving participants the opportunity to build practical skills, gain hands-on experience and explore pathways into the construction industry.

Over two weeks, First Nations participants took part in practical workplace immersions, giving them hands-on exposure to different areas of the construction industry.

The hands-on nature of the course gave participants the opportunity to learn new skills, challenge themselves and gain a better understanding of the expectations and opportunities within the construction industry.

SYC provided First Nations mentors throughout the program, offering support, guidance and encouragement as participants developed their skills and explored future employment and training pathways.

Participants completed two nationally recognised accredited units with TAPS: Working Safely at Heights and Operate Elevated Work Platforms up to 11 Metres. These qualifications provided valuable, industry-relevant skills and credentials to support participants as they consider their next steps.

The course also created opportunities for participants to connect with employers and learn more about potential careers in the construction industry. The program concluded with a graduation event attended by multiple employers, giving participants the chance to celebrate their achievements and begin conversations about potential employment opportunities.

For some participants, the course helped uncover new career interests and possibilities.

“I really liked the roofing and I’d love to get a job doing that. I got so much out of this and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished.”

Another participant reflected on the opportunity to experience trades they had not previously considered:

“I’ve really enjoyed getting to experience trades I’ve never even had the idea of getting into. It has been a great opportunity.”

SYC’s National Partnerships Manager, Scott Whitmore, reflected on the change he saw in participants over the two weeks:

“It was a wonderful two weeks. The participants came in feeling nervous and shy, and today, on graduation day, they’re full of confidence and so happy to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Having employers here has been fantastic, giving participants the opportunity to connect with potential employers and see where their next steps could lead.

“A huge thank you to Luke (TAPS CEO) and the TAPS team, and to Joe Scopacasa (TAPS Operations Manager) for putting their heart and soul into this program. The participants have loved every minute of it, which is a testament to the work that has gone into making it such a success.

“It’s been a fantastic partnership and we look forward to the next one.”

The course provided participants with more than practical skills. It created opportunities to build confidence, connect with employers and gain a clearer understanding of where a career in construction could lead.
