SYC Celebrates Harmony Day
03 Apr 2017
At SYC we believe everyone belongs and everyday we strive to create a culture that is welcoming and respectful for all of our staff and clients. While we promote respect and diversity everyday it’s also important to take a moment to reflect and celebrate, which is why sites across SYC celebrated Harmony Day, the International Day for the Elimination of Discrimination.
Across the organisation SYC’s core mission is to positively affect the lives of people in need. We care about and have a relentless belief in all people and we’re committed to helping them on their journey to independence. We now do this work with over 61,000 Australians with over 12,000 (20%) of those clients identifying as culturally and linguistically diverse.
We’re also a truly diverse organisation with, at last count, employees identifying with 47 different cultural backgrounds and speaking 30 languages. When organisations encourage and support a diverse workplace they perform better and we’re proud that SYC is a workplace that promotes tolerance, respect and an appreciation for cultural diversity. For us Harmony Day is the perfect opportunity to encourage all of our staff to draw on their diverse backgrounds, skills and talents and focus them on areas where these attributes can enhance or add value to our working environment. Our cultural diversity enriches our lives, our communities and our work so when we create a sense of belonging amongst our own staff we create a sense of belonging amongst our clients as well.
To celebrate Harmony Day our head office, Epping, Sunbury, Moonee Ponds and Box Hill sites all hosted Festival of Food events and showed off some exceptional hidden cooking talents. Our Training Prospects Elizabeth went the extra mile and hosted a week of events for a Taste of Harmony. We also encouraged our staff to share why our diversity makes SYC a great place to work and we received some fantastic responses.
