Salliann back on track thanks to ParentsNext

The Australian Government initiative ParentsNext, designed to help parents of young children re-enter the workforce, was officially launched in the Playford region last month by a team of providers including SYC, People Plus, Uniting Care Wesley and Your Town.
Stacey Dutschke, Regional Manager, SYC said ParentsNext helps parents identify their education and employment goals and access support services such as TAFE, secondary schools, training providers and employment services.
“For many parents of young children it can be hard to know where to start when trying to re-enter the workforce, especially if they have taken a long period of time out to raise their family”, she said.
One parent already benefiting from SYC’s ParentsNext Project Aspire is Salliann who was lacking confidence after taking time out to raise her children. Before becoming a mother Salliann worked as a Manager at Woolworths, however when thinking about returning to work she wanted something that would provide more flexibility for her to be involved in her children’s education and schooling.
Unsure about what career path she wanted to take, Salliann worked with Dianne, Aspire Team Leader to talk about her options, she identified the desire to run her own massage therapy business which would enable her to work around her family commitments.
In order to achieve her goals Salliann applied for a Certificate V in Massage Therapy and Diploma in Remedial Therapy at TAFE which she is hoping to commence in 2017. She is currently completing a computer course to increase her digital literacy and looking into Christmas casual positions in retail.
Salliann is grateful for the support she received as a ParentsNext Project participant and strongly recommends the program to other parents who are thinking about transitioning back to work.
“When speaking with other parents who are thinking about returning to work, I am very excited to tell them my plans for the future and how I would not have done any of this without the direction and support of my ParentsNext provider,” she said.
SYC is a ParentsNext Project provider in the Playford (SA) and Hume (VIC) local government areas, visit our ParentsNext page for more information.
