SYC recently partnered with Prince’s Trust International (PTI) to deliver the ‘Get Into’ youth employment pilot program in Australia for the first time.

We are already seeing some fantastic results with 12 young people graduating from the first ‘Get Into Retail’ program facilitated by local employer OTR (On The Run). The ‘Get Into’ program has been delivered in the UK by PTI’s sister charity, The Prince’s Trust, since 2007, and  is designed to help young people who are unemployed develop sector-specific employability skills, vocational skills and real world work experience to ultimately get them into jobs.

The Prince’s Trust Chief Executive, Dame Martina Milburn DCVO CBE said Prince Charles was “particularly keen” that The Trust did what it could to help organisations in countries such as Australia.

“The important thing for us with this program is that you have got a sufficient cohort of young people who are looking for work and you’ve got skills shortages — you match the two together and hopefully it works,” she said.

“We want to run these pilots to see how they go and obviously evaluate and make sure they are right — are the young people supported properly (and) is that the area where Australia has the key skill shortages.

“We want to monitor what happens to them going into work, do they stay in work, because it’s not just about training someone for a job it’s keeping them in a job,” she said.

The ‘Get Into’ program supported 6000 young people in the UK last year. SYC Chief Executive, Paul Edginton said the program will provide an invaluable opportunity for local young people and employers to benefit from a proven model.  “The ‘Get Into’ program is targeted, it’s specific and as we’ve seen from the UK experience, it works.” Get Into Program student works on an evaluation tool “We look forward to this being the start of a long and fruitful partnership with Prince’s Trust International,” he said. Along with OTR, SYC and PTI have signed agreements with nannySA (part of Hessel Group) and ECH Group to run the pilot sector-specific employment programs. One of Hessel Group’s business units, Enhance Training and Recruitment, is providing training designed to provide young people with access to a national accredited qualification in Early Childhood Education and Care and genuine employment opportunities within the childcare sector. Hessel Group Chief Executive, Tanya Cole said its nannySA business is currently putting 9 young people through the initial six-week ‘Get Into Childcare’ program. “We’ve been committed to effective training in our sector for many years as a tangible path to genuine employment and the best possible care for children and families. “This is a great opportunity to be involved in a world best program with an international leader,” she said.
