National Volunteer Week Parade
13 Jun 2019
This year marked 30 years of National Volunteer week. Volunteers around the country celebrated the almost 6 million volunteers who provide immeasurable support in the communities.
On a slightly smaller scale, SYC celebrated and thanked the 68 volunteers who provide support to the programs we deliver.
There are currently volunteers in 7 different areas including House Hunt, Youth Space, Donation Support, Administration, Studio West, BOLT, Geared2Drive and the Youth Leadership Team. They generously give approximately 2000 hours a year assisting young people to move into independent living, learn new skills, get involved with the community, engage with work or training and provide support to SYC practice.
On the 20th of May, volunteers Malcolm (Geared2Drive), Emily (Youth Leadership Team), Phillip (Studio West) and our Volunteer Coordinator, Meriki joined close to 1000 other volunteers to represent the incredible work volunteers do in nationally in a march from the Torrens Parade Ground to Victoria Square.
Emily said, “I like to volunteer for HYPA because I can give back to the company that gave me my start.”
It was a great morning out and we celebrated at the end with a BBQ lunch, fruchocs and fruit put on by sponsors and supporters of Volunteering SA & NT. We heard from His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia and Patron of Volunteering SA&NT; the Hon Corey Wingard, Minister for Policy, Emergency Services and Correctional Services, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing; and Member of the Executive Council and Kristen Martin, VSA&NT Board Deputy Chairperson.
SYC would like to extend a massive thank you to the volunteers who support our programs.
Volunteer Malcolm said, “I enjoy volunteering for HYPA because it’s a great team to work with. The young people I meet are so positive and it’s really great to give them a hand along in life in some way.”
