Craigieburn Mother One Step Closer to her Dream of Becoming a Cake Maker
19 Nov 2019
Janait is a mother from a refugee background who came to Australia five years ago.
Upon arrival she attended a few English classes aiming to improve her English communication skills, but wasn’t able to find work. In 2018 Janait began attending quarterly ParentsNext meetings at Job Prospects Craigieburn. She had the passion and hobbies to make cakes, so her Support Officer helped her to enrol into a formal course, Certificate III in Baking at the Kangan Institute. She successfully started her course in February 2019.
Since starting the course Janait has progressed greatly, both in her skills and in her confidence in the workplace. A cake based on cult game Fortnite saw her win an third place in the novelty cake category at a statewide baking industry show. Following this, Janait participated in the Geelong Baking Show and came first.
Janait won in the ‘Gateau’ category with her chocolate orange sponge cake with chocolate ganache filling and vanilla cream. She said the award was a real confidence boost.
“Achieving this award means a lot to me and I feel so proud of myself,” Janait said.
“The course is the best thing I’ve done in my life. I’m now a lot more confident in cake making and I’m achieving my biggest dream of becoming a cake maker.
