This year SYC celebrates 60 years of operations. To commemorate this milestone we have set ourselves the challenge of bringing you 60 Stories for 60 Years! Throughout 2018 we will be sharing stories about past clients, staff, volunteers, programs and other key events that have taken place since our inception in 1958.

60 Stories for 60 Years will explore the evolution and DNA of SYC to show how we’ve grown so much and the core beliefs and values that brought us to where we are today.

How we’ve grown

SYC was initially established as Service to Youth Council in September 1958 as a not-for-profit volunteer group with a clear mandate to support disadvantaged young people in Adelaide. We had a strong focus on social work, with the organisation encouraging young people to engage in their community.

For six decades we have devoted ourselves to helping young people achieve stability and prosperity in their lives. We are proud that our innovation and growth has allowed us to also extend this expertise to benefit people of all ages.

From humble beginnings, working with a few hundred young people in Adelaide, we now support over 60,000 clients of all ages, nationally, every year. We have now helped three generations of people to find a safe place to sleep, develop new skills, gain and sustain employment, finish school and reconnect with their families.

SYC has also grown from offering just a few social services and activities, to delivering over 34 different programs and services across the four focus areas: Home, Wellbeing, Learning and Working. We’ve shown that we’re not afraid of some trial and error, but that our passion and commitment to those in need has been our fuel to continually extend and deepen SYC services.

Our beliefs and values

It’s clear from the archives that we have always had a relentless belief in people and their potential. The organisation continues to focus on identifying strengths and overcoming barriers when working with clients, giving them the tools and support they need to improve their own lives.

We look forward to sharing stories of SYC working together with partners, employees and clients; creating trust, with people in need, sector leaders and the Australian public and rewarding courage, of our clients, our staff and our volunteers.

Ultimately, 60 Stories for 60 Years will show (and celebrate) that supporting people to lead independent lives has remained central to our work since 1958.

Stories included in the 60 Stories for 60 Years project will be published via the SYC website, at least one story every week over 2018. The stories will additionally be publicised on our multiple social media channels. By the end of 2018, we will have 60 stories celebrating our dynamic and influential history.

Thank you to everyone who has played a part in SYC’s history. We hope you enjoy reading our 60 Stories for 60 Years this year as we celebrate this amazing milestone and look to many more stories to come.
