Bronzed Up©

Bronzed Up© is a programme for young people aged 15-19, in particular, young people who have been in contact with the juvenile justice system. Over a 10 week period, participants in Bronzed Up© train to become Surf Life Savers and gain their Bronze Medallion. Bronzed Up© gives young participants a real opportunity to be actively and positively involved in their community.

Why is Bronzed Up©  beneficial for young offenders?

Research indicates that participation in sport assists young people to address their offending behaviours. Bronzed Up© provides young people with the opportunity to make meaningful changes in their lives by reconnecting them with the community in a positive way, reducing the likelihood of them re-offending.

How do HYPA™ volunteers assist Bronzed Up©

A key feature of SYC since its inception has been the involvement of volunteers who provide invaluable support and encouragement to young people connected with SYC. HYPA™ volunteers help young people to build self-esteem and confidence and assist them to achieve their personal goals. Volunteers have been integral to the success of Bronzed Up©, encouraging participants to try activities that are new and challenging.

History of Bronzed Up©

The Bronzed Up© pilot programme was set up in October 2006 by SYC, West Beach Surf Life Saving Club (WBSLSC) and with a grant from SGIC. Eleven participants learnt first aid, surf safety and surf rescue. Four of the participants were successful in achieving their Bronze Medallion and two are life savers at WBSLSC. SYC acknowledges and thanks WBSLSC for its commitment to the young people involved in the programme.
