The Co-operative Foundation Court (CFC) is a group of seven inner city flats offering medium-term accommodation for young people. CFC provides stable accommodation for young people aged 17-25 who are experiencing barriers to accessing independent accommodation.
CFC was established in 1993 by SYC, Adelaide Bank and Adelaide City Council in response to the significant gap in the accommodation market for medium-term (6-12 months) accommodation for young people. CFC fills this gap by assisting young people in making the transition to independent living.
CFC provides a springboard into stable long-term accommodation with Housing SA or the private rental market. SYC helps tenants learn to live independently and to be part of the community at CFC. CFC is managed on community housing principles with an SYC volunteer on site as a caretaker. Tenants are also supported by an SYC case manager who assists tenants to learn independent living skills and access education and employment. Tenant meetings are held on a regular basis to talk about issues that come up and how, as a group, these can be solved. Tenants participate in community tasks and learn to take responsibility and pride in their surroundings.
SYC provides tenants with a reference and ongoing support when they move into other accommodation. Most tenants successfully move into independent accommodation with Housing SA, the private rental market, into share accommodation and in some cases, return to their family.
¨ Since it began in 1993, 118 young people have been accommodated at CFC ¨ The average stay for a young person is 6 months |
